Retail businesses under pressure

Creating profitable retail business is a difficult thing in all the Nordic countries, concludes a new analysis by Danske Bank. Why? Fierce competition and consumers moving online, says private economist at Danske Bank Louise Aggerstrøm.

Online sales and fundamental changes in consumer habits in the Nordics make it harder for traditional retail businesses to maintain sales at “normal” levels and leaves big parts of the industry unprofitable.

The analysis is based on the biggest 300 corporations in the Nordic retail industry and on the development in financial results among certain parts of the industry from 2013-2017.

These years means big changes for the retail business as a whole. Competition is harder than ever, and revenues don’t go up the way we’ve gotten used to see. In Denmark we simply spent money differently than what was the case 10 years ago, are some parts of retail business are hit really hard due to these changes.
